Creating a Kiosk System
Challenges and Solutions

We are tackling an innovative project at the Bayside Oceanfront Resort and the McMillan Arts Centre (MAC)!
The resort is providing wall space in the public areas as a satellite gallery of the MAC. Through the gallery, artwork from local and regional artists is for sale at the Bayside.
We're implementing a kiosk system that promotes "ART @ the Bayside" that enhances guest interaction to purchase artwork. That said, we've been considering the challenges that could arise.
Hardware and Installation
A key issue is the need for reliable hardware and strategic placement in busy public areas. Finding the balance between visibility and accessibility while ensuring it doesn’t disrupt foot traffic is tricky but doable with careful planning. One way to mitigate wear and tear, or even theft, is to use protective enclosures or mounting systems that secure the iPad. We've determined a suitable location directly in front of the front desk that is visible yet out of the way of foot traffic, which will encourage user interactions but make theft and malicious damage very difficult for bad actors.
Internet and Connectivity
The system's reliance on the cloud and publicly accessible databases means it depends heavily on stable internet connectivity. A poor internet connection could severely disrupt the kiosk's functionality. A cloud-based VPS website mitigates this challenge because the system is designed to allow on-site and remote access to its database. Public hotspots and resort-based internet access are possible solutions for kiosk connectivity.
Software Usability and Maintenance
User-friendliness is vital because a smooth, intuitive interface can make all the difference, particularly for guests who aren’t as tech-savvy. Offering prompts or short guides on how to use the kiosk will help minimize confusion. As for ongoing software maintenance, making sure the curator receives in-depth training will be crucial. A plan has been developed for regular reviews or audits of the software to ensure it stays updated and bug-free.
Security Concerns
Since the kiosk is in a public place, it’s wise to consider potential vulnerabilities. Regular security audits and physical tamper-proofing—like using secure mounts or locks—can go a long way. And with cyber threats always evolving, there will be a monitoring system to track unauthorized access attempts or cyber vulnerabilities.
Budget Constraints and Ongoing Costs
The budget is always a concern. We understand the initial and ongoing costs. Factoring in unexpected expenses—like a contingency fund—will provide a safety net if unanticipated costs arise. Open communication between the Bayside Resort and MAC regarding cost-sharing is important to avoid misunderstandings.
While the proposed kiosk project has the potential to enhance visitor engagement and serve as a significant and valuable resource for both the resort and the arts centre, challenges related to hardware setup, internet connectivity, software usability, security, and budgeting could complicate its implementation. Awareness of these potential obstacles and planning accordingly are critical to ensuring the system’s long-term success.
